GART Kickstarter Campaign

GART, The Great American Roadtrip, was a Kickstarter campaign launched in 2015. This campaign was to create an interactive hitch hiking road trip across the southern United States. The project included copywriting, illustrations, and videos. The Kickstarter was cancelled due to extenuating circumstances but the trip was taken later but with our own car.

O you youths, western youths, So impatient, full of action, full of manly pride and friendship, Plain I see you, western youths, see you tramping with the foremost, Pioneers! O pioneers!- Walt Whitman

About this project

So a few months back, me and my best friend, Bennett were chatting. We were talking about how fast time flew through college, what our plans would be after, and how much we wanted to have an epic adventure before starting our professional careers. After months of planning and talking we set on the idea of The Great American Roadtrip.

All the past we leave behind; We debouch upon a newer, mightier world, varied world, Fresh and strong the world we seize, world of labor and the march, Pioneers! O pioneers!

What is The Great American Roadtrip?

A few of the time honored traditions of this great country are exploration, adventure, heading West, and the roadtrip. We want to experience America and its people Coast to Coast. This is more than just a roadtrip and this isn't just a vlog. It is an experience, an experience for all of us. The American values of fortitude, self-reliance and perseverance are all needed in this trip.

Starting on the East Coast we will hitch hike heading West and will visit the following cities:

  • Savannah, GA
  • Jacksonville, FL
  • Pensacola, FL
  • New Orleans, LA
  • Houston, TX
  • San Antonio, Tx
  • Austin, TX
  • Dallas, TX
  • Oklahoma City, OK
  • Amarillo, TX
  • Albuquerque, NM
  • Flagstaff, AZ
  • Phoenix, AZ
  • Los Angeles, CA

And we will visit the sites of:

  • Hamilton Pool Preserve
  • The Grand Canyon
  • Wet Beaver Creek
  • Montezuma Castle National Park

We want to make this trip as fun and interactive as possible. How will we do this? Get the viewers involved! We will be on social media and keep an open forum with our viewers through:

  • YouTube-
  • Instagram-
  • Tumblr-
  • Twitter-
  • Facebook-
  • Snap Chat- @GART2015

Another fun addition we want to try out is the The Hitch Hiker's Guide to GART! We want to hear what you want to experience! You guy can influence the trip itself! You can decide what we do and where we go! Each day, as long as you give us things to do, we will select an adventure to go on, a site to see, a place to eat or even a dare to perform! And of course we will involve it with our YouTube channel and SnapChat stories. This will be a fun way to keep an interplay and you guys will really be involved in the experience!

Where will the funding go?

One of the unique aspects of this trip is to make it as streamline as possible in terms of cost. This means hitch hiking, staying in hostels/air bnb/couchsurfer, and buying groceries to save on food costs. This philosophy also aligns with the goal of really delving into the fabric of this nation through its people as well as its land.

Who are we?

We detachments steady throwing, Down the edges, through the passes, up the mountains steep, Conquering, holding, daring, venturing, as we go, the unknown ways, Pioneers! O pioneers!

Our History as Friends:

We are best friends since high school. We first met back in 2007 in an AP English Literature class and became fast friends ever since. Through ups and downs, nerding out debating over which StarWars or Lord of the Rings characters were more powerful, and although very different personalities, we've always had each other's backs. Bennett wanted to get out of Kentucky after high school. I stayed behind. Although there is nearly 1000 miles between us, we stayed in regular contact via skype, text and posting funny things on each other's Facebook walls. We made yearly trips to visit one another as well. As we both come to the end of another era of our lives by graduating college, we hope to go on an epic adventure exploring the many different cultures and stories across this great country. With this project, we have the opportunity to create, experience, and share an epic journey before entering the "real world".

My name is Jordan Streeter. I am a senior marketing major with a minor in management and brand management at the University of Louisville in Louisville, KY. I've always had a passion for creativity especially in the way of photography. I've been photographing since the age of 11 with my first disposable camera. Since then I've spent countless hours teaching myself new techniques from digital, to print making, to photoshop to simple disposable cameras. (Links to my blog below)

Recently I went on a study abroad to Den Haag, Netherlands. There I decided to begin my hand at vlogs and making short videos. I immediately fell in love. In between my full class schedule and late nights, I would make at least one video and photography set a week. It kept me challenged and hungry for more exploration. I love to meet people, learn their stories and experience a place from the ways of the locals. You can check out my blog and videos I currently make here:

Hi there! My name is Bennett. I recently graduated from Boston University with a degree in Biology and a minor in Marine Science. Next fall I plan on pursuing a master’s degree in Marine Biology at Hawai’I Pacific University. I’ve always had a passion for Earth’s unique ecosystems and the diversity of life that exists on our small solitary planet. This has led me to my current professional pursuits. I am particularly interested in ecological dynamics and how our society can take steps to becoming more sustainable.

I’ve always had a passion for travelling and seeing incredible sites. I’ve gone on road trips with my parents across the Midwest and Northeast, I’ve organized trips to Costa Rica and Puerto Rico, and I’ve gone to Belize for field work on coral reefs.

I love adventures and I’m excited for the potential this one has! I plan on using my knowledge and experience in biology and bringing to light a different perspective along this trip to share with you all! Along our trek across the US, I hope to highlight the great expanse of natural landscapes we will see and share my appreciation of nature.

What we will benefit from The Great American Roadtrip.

From Nebraska, from Arkansas, Central inland race are we, from Missouri, with the continental blood intervein’d; All the hands of comrades clasping, all the Southern, all the Northern, Pioneers! O pioneers!

When we use the word "we", it means those of us physically taking the trip and those of you who support us and add to the experience. From this trip our aim is for our cameras, camcorders, our photos and snap chats, blog entries and dares to connect with the American Spirit, its people and land. This will not be just another travel vlog/blog. Our goal is to make this a sharable and interactive experience for us through these mediums. So go ahead! Comment on the YouTube videos! Snap Chat us! Hash tag us on Instagram and Twitter! Ask us questions on Tumblr! You guys are just as much of this trip as we are and we want to hear your beautiful voices!

We hope you join us in this epic adventure and come along for the trip!

To have some fun while we prepare for this adventure, we've set up some benchmark goals to show our appreciation for you guys!

  • $1250- Yeah, baby! We're heating up now! In celebration you can see us stumble and guffaw in some bloopers we had while filming the Kickstarter video!
  • $3000- WE CAN DO IT! ALMOST THERE! We'll get creative with this one and make a fun "Oh, The Places You'll Go" short animation to get you guys pumped for the real thing!

These are of us, they are with us, All for primal needed work, while the followers there in embryo wait behind, We to-day’s procession heading, we the route for travel clearing, Pioneers! O pioneers!

Risks and challenges

This trip has great potential. And like with all things in life, with the potential comes risks and challenges. We've broken down the risks and challenges into three main parts:

First, Logistically: Since this trip is reliant heavily on these great people of the United States, our first and foremost challenge is the timing of the hitch hiking. This selection of transportation has the potential of delaying traveling from city to city, but will not hinder our progress!

Secondly,Technological: with the hitch hiking and migrant aspect of the trip, battery life of cameras, camcorders and phones could cause an issue. We will have extra battery packs but as always, there is a possibility of missing a shot or two.

Thirdly, Technological: To upload the updates, videos and photos, a solid internet connection will be needed. Our biggest ally on this trip will probably be the coffee shops along the way! 🙂
